“Unstill” from the Beneath the Surface series is informed by the nature of great white sharks—apex predators often defined by power and presence. Yet beyond the intensity of the hunt, their movement serves a more fundamental purpose. In order to breathe, they must remain in constant motion. To stop is not rest, but consequence.

What drew Tristan to this subject was the reality within that condition. Removed from pursuit, the shark continues forward—not out of urgency, but necessity. The motion is continuous, without pause, carrying a quiet tension beneath the surface.

The painting holds that state. It captures a moment where nothing is being chased and nothing is being threatened, yet movement persists. Within the work, that continuity becomes inseparable from survival—a sustained presence where stillness is not an option.
