"Breathe” from the Beneath the Surface series is rooted in the migration and birthing behavior of humpback whales. In order for their young to survive, mothers travel thousands of miles from cold feeding grounds to warmer waters, where birth becomes possible. Immediately after birth, the mother must bring her newborn to the surface for its first breath—an act that determines survival in a single, precise moment.

What stayed with Tristan was not the biology itself, but the weight of that instant: the urgency, the protection, and the quiet intensity of a first breath breaking through water. It is a moment most people never witness, yet it carries a deeply familiar emotional charge.

The painting is a response to that moment. Rather than illustrating the full journey, it isolates the immediacy of the ascent—the connection between mother and newborn at the threshold between water and air. Through this, the work holds a tension between vulnerability and necessity, where life is both fragile and fully present at once.
